Arginine and blood pressure medicine: why the combination needs a check
Arginine and blood pressure medicine can add together, so pressure may fall too far (arginine hypotension). A review of 11 trials found systolic readings 5.39 mm Hg lower on 4 to 24 g a day. MemoHoney's arginine rows total 400 mg, so ask your pharmacist before combining.

Why do pharmacists ask about arginine and blood pressure medicine?
Pharmacists ask because arginine might bring blood pressure down, and a blood pressure pill does the same on purpose.
Mayo Clinic says oral arginine can lower blood pressure in healthy people and that it may add to blood pressure medicines (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine). Two effects in the same direction can push pressure too low and cause dizziness.
A review of 11 placebo-controlled trials with 387 people found systolic pressure 5.39 mm Hg lower on 4 to 24 g a day (Dong 2011, arginine BP). Those doses are gram-level.
Does a low dose of arginine still matter with blood pressure pills?
A low dose of arginine is less likely to matter than a gram dose, but we found no study that sets a safe amount for people on blood pressure pills.
| Item | Amount a day |
|---|---|
| MemoHoney, two arginine rows | 400 mg |
| Blood pressure trials in the review | 4,000 to 24,000 mg |
| Typical dietary intake | 4 to 5 g |
Typical food intake of arginine is 4 to 5 g a day (NIH ODS, exercise supplements). Still, the label does not state how much arginine the "AKG 2:1 Extract" holds, so ask rather than guess.
What are the signs that arginine and blood pressure pills are too much?
The signs are dizziness on standing, lightheadedness, fainting or a racing heartbeat, and they mean stop and call.
- Dizzy, faint or lightheaded on standingA sign blood pressure may be too low, especially with nitrates, ED medicines or blood pressure medicines. Sit or lie down, stop the capsules and call your doctor.
- Chest pain, fainting, trouble breathingCall 911 now. Do not drive yourself, and do not wait for a supplement to help.
- Stomach pain, bloating or diarrheaThe common side effects of arginine. Stop and ask a clinician if they last.
- Rash, hives or swellingPossible allergy. Stop and get medical help; swelling of the face or throat or trouble breathing is an emergency.
- Memory slipping fast, getting lost, repeating questionsThese are warning signs NIA lists for a medical check. See a clinician rather than waiting for a supplement to help.
Signs from (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine) (NIA, Memory problems and aging) (FDA report a problem). This list is not complete. A supplement is never a reason to wait.

FAQ
MemoHoney questions people ask
Can arginine cause low blood pressure?
Yes, arginine might bring blood pressure down, especially at gram doses and alongside blood pressure medicines. Signs include dizziness on standing and fainting. Stop it and call your clinician if you notice them.
Is 400 mg of arginine enough to matter?
We found no study that sets a safe or unsafe level at 400 mg for people on blood pressure pills. That is why the check matters. Ask your pharmacist, and mention the extract row too.
Should I stop my blood pressure pill to take arginine?
No. Keep taking prescribed medicine unless your prescriber changes it. A supplement is not a replacement for blood pressure treatment, and stopping a pill can raise your readings.
What blood pressure reading needs urgent care?
The AHA calls readings above 180/120 with chest pain, shortness of breath or numbness a hypertensive emergency. Call 911 for those. For normal checks, under 120/80 is the AHA's normal range.
