L-citrulline in MemoHoney: what 200 mg per capsule means

Quick answer

L-citrulline is an amino acid, and MemoHoney lists it twice: 100 mg of citrulline HCl and 100 mg of citrulline malate, 200 mg per capsule. Exercise and blood pressure trials used 3 to 9 g a day, about 15 to 45 times more. We found no human trial of citrulline for memory in ordinary adults.

The ingredient

What is L-citrulline in MemoHoney?

L-citrulline is a non-essential amino acid that the body turns into arginine, and MemoHoney prints it on two rows of the panel.

The rows read "L-Citrulline HCl" at 100 mg and "L-Citrulline Malate" at 100 mg (MemoHoney label). That makes 200 mg of citrulline material per capsule. The seller presents citrulline as a nitric-oxide building block that is easier to keep up than arginine; the label itself makes no such statement.

What the studies foundWe found no human trial that tested citrulline or citrulline malate on memory in ordinary adults. The closest item is a 12-athlete trial of a mix of BCAA, arginine and citrulline, where reaction time held up after fatigue; the mix cannot show what citrulline did alone. Exercise reviews used 3 g or more, 15 times the label's 0.2 g.
Main cautionShort studies up to 6 g a day for 4 weeks reported no adverse effects, but long-term safety has not been assessed well; stomach discomfort occurred in 6 of 41 people in one study.

Two forms

What is citrulline malate, and how does it differ from citrulline HCl?

Citrulline malate is citrulline bound to malic acid, and it is about 56.6% citrulline by weight (NIH ODS, exercise supplements). Citrulline HCl is citrulline bound to hydrochloric acid.

So the 100 mg malate row carries roughly 57 mg of citrulline itself. The panel does not state the citrulline content of either row, so any total beyond 200 mg of material would be a guess.

The research

Is L-citrulline good for the brain or memory?

We found no human trial that tested citrulline or citrulline malate on memory in ordinary adults, so nobody can say it does anything for the brain.

The closest item is a trial of 12 taekwondo athletes who took a mix of branched-chain amino acids, arginine and citrulline between simulated matches. Their reaction times held up while those on placebo slowed (Chen 2016, BCAA arginine citrulline). Because three ingredients were given together, the trial cannot show what citrulline did alone, and the athletes were fatigued by sport.

The wider evidence is equally quiet. The National Institute on Aging recommends no supplement to prevent cognitive decline (NIA, Cognitive health and older adults).

When memory is the worry

Memory problems that are new, getting worse or getting in the way of daily life need a clinician, not a supplement.

Label vs research

How much L-citrulline is in one MemoHoney capsule?

One capsule holds 200 mg across the two rows, which is 0.2 g, and a bottle of 30 holds 6 g.

A review of exercise studies required at least 3 g per dose, and it found a small effect (0.20) in healthy exercisers (Trexler 2019, citrulline meta). Blood pressure trials used 3 to 9 g a day (Barkhidarian 2019, citrulline BP). Three grams is 15 times the label, and 9 g is 45 times. The meter below scores the evidence for memory, focus or brain blood flow from 0 to 4.

  • L-Arginine

    Very little

One small pilot used 6.4 g a day; the label has at most 0.4 g, about 6% of that. (Teotia 2026, oral arginine pilot) (Reutens 1997, arginine cerebral flow)

  • L-Citrulline

    None shown

We found no trial of citrulline malate for memory in adults; the label has 0.2 g of the two forms. (Chen 2016, BCAA arginine citrulline) (NIH ODS, exercise supplements)

  • Beta Alanine

    None shown

One 28-day trial in 20 soldiers found no change on a cognitive test; the label has 0.04 g. (Hoffman 2014, beta-alanine soldiers) (Meftahi 2023, beta-alanine review)

  • Niacin

    Very little

Food niacin was linked to lower risk in one cohort; no trial tested a 7.5 mg capsule. (Morris 2004, dietary niacin cohort) (Hegyi 2004, pellagra review)

  • Calcium

    None shown

A trial of 1,000 mg calcium plus vitamin D found no cognitive effect; the label has 18 mg. (Rossom 2012, WHI calcium + D) (Rutjes 2018, Cochrane vitamins)

Our plain reading of the research linked on each row, for memory, focus or brain blood flow, on a 0 to 4 scale. It rates the ingredient as studied, at the studied amounts. It does not rate MemoHoney: no study has tested the capsule, and its amounts are far smaller.

All five rows are compared on the formula page.

Blood flow

Does L-citrulline raise nitric oxide or blood flow?

Oral citrulline raises blood levels of citrulline and arginine, but proof that it changes blood flow is scarce and inconsistent (Gonzalez 2020, citrulline review).

That is the conclusion of a review of the area. Several studies report better exercise results, but they used gram doses, and the authors call for more work on blood flow itself. A 2023 review also found that arginine and citrulline gave athletes mixed results (Park 2023, arginine citrulline). None of this involved 200 mg, and none tested memory.

The phrases "boosts nitric oxide" and "increases cerebral blood flow" are marketing lines. The label of MemoHoney uses neither.

Safety

What are the side effects of L-citrulline?

L-citrulline side effects are mostly stomach discomfort, which occurred in 6 of 41 people in one study (NIH ODS, exercise supplements).

Short studies of up to 6 g a day for 4 weeks reported no serious problems, but long-term safety has not been well studied. Citrulline becomes arginine in the body, and the arginine cautions may matter here: blood pressure can drop too far with nitrates, sildenafil-type medicines and blood pressure medicines, and arginine may add to blood thinners and diabetes medicines (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine). The MemoHoney capsule also holds 400 mg of arginine itself.

Ask before you order

Ask your doctor or pharmacist first if you take nitrates, sildenafil-type medicines, blood pressure medicines, blood thinners or diabetes medicines, or if you have had a heart attack. Chest pain, fainting or trouble breathing: call 911. Keep taking prescribed medicine as directed.

The takeaway

Should L-citrulline be the reason you choose MemoHoney?

No, not if you want a memory result, because we found no trial of citrulline for memory and the label holds 200 mg.

The fair points are that both amounts are printed and there is no proprietary blend. See the ingredients page for the whole panel and side effects for the medicine cautions.

FAQ

L-citrulline and MemoHoney: common questions

How much citrulline is in MemoHoney?

MemoHoney has 200 mg of citrulline material per capsule: 100 mg of L-citrulline HCl and 100 mg of L-citrulline malate. The label does not say how much pure citrulline each row holds.

What is citrulline malate?

Citrulline malate is citrulline bound to malic acid, and it is about 56.6% citrulline by weight. The MemoHoney panel lists 100 mg of it. That works out to roughly 57 mg of citrulline if the usual share applies.

Is L-citrulline good for memory?

We found no human trial of citrulline for memory in ordinary adults. The closest study mixed it with other amino acids in 12 athletes, so it cannot isolate citrulline. The National Institute on Aging recommends no supplement for memory.

Is citrulline better than arginine?

No source we found shows that. Citrulline becomes arginine in the body, and the seller says it is easier to keep up, but MemoHoney holds both and tests were done at gram doses. Neither has a memory trial at the label amounts.

What are the side effects of citrulline malate?

Stomach discomfort is the main one, reported by 6 of 41 people in one study. Short studies up to 6 g a day found no serious problems. Because citrulline turns into arginine, ask a clinician if you take nitrates or blood pressure medicine.

Does L-citrulline lower blood pressure?

At 3 to 9 g a day, trials found a small drop in systolic pressure, about 4 mm Hg on average. The capsule has 0.2 g, so that result does not carry over. Do not treat blood pressure with a supplement; keep taking your medicine.
