Beta alanine in MemoHoney: what 40 mg per capsule means
Beta alanine is an amino acid that muscle cells use to make carnosine, and MemoHoney lists 40 mg per capsule. The exercise guideline is 4 to 6 g a day, so the label holds about 1% of that. In the one cognition test we found, 28 days of beta alanine changed nothing. Tingling starts near 800 mg in a single dose.

The ingredient
What is beta alanine in MemoHoney?
Beta alanine is an amino acid that muscle cells combine with histidine to make carnosine, and MemoHoney lists it as one row at 40 mg per capsule.
It is the smallest amount on the amino acid side of the panel (MemoHoney label). Beta alanine is best known as a sports ingredient, so its place among the memory rows is the seller's choice. The label does not explain it.
| Name on the label | Beta Alanine |
|---|---|
| What it is | An amino acid that muscle cells combine with histidine to make carnosine |
| What it is sold for | Sold for stamina; here named among the memory-support rows |
| Amount per capsule (label) | 40 mg |
| Amount used in research | 4 to 6 g a day for at least 4 weeks (ISSN, exercise); 28 days in the one cognition test we found |
| What the studies found | In 20 young soldiers, 28 days of beta-alanine improved shooting accuracy and jump power but not a 2-minute serial subtraction test of thinking (p = 0.844). Reviews of how it might reach the brain through carnosine are speculative. Exercise doses of 4 to 6 g a day are about 100 times the label's 40 mg. |
| Main caution | Tingling of the skin (paresthesia) is the one common effect: it starts at single doses of about 800 mg or more, lasts about an hour, and is not harmful. The label's 40 mg is far below that, so studies do not tell us what to expect from it. |
Label vs research
How much beta alanine is in one MemoHoney capsule?
One capsule holds 40 mg of beta alanine, and a bottle of 30 holds 1.2 g in all.
The International Society of Sports Nutrition says 4 to 6 g a day for at least 2 to 4 weeks raises muscle carnosine and helped efforts of 1 to 4 minutes (ISSN beta-alanine stand). Divide 40 by 4,000 and the label is 1%. Trials ran from 1.6 to 6.4 g a day (NIH ODS, exercise supplements). Beta alanine is the third row of the chart below.
- L-Arginine (base + AKG extract)400 mg on the label
Studies: 6.4 g a day in one memory pilot; up to 30 g a day for 90 days in a safety trial. Studies used about 16 to 75 times the label amount. (Teotia 2026, oral arginine pilot) (McNeal 2018, arginine 30 g safety)
- L-Citrulline (HCl + malate)200 mg on the label
Studies: 3 to 9 g a day in exercise and blood pressure trials; no memory trial found. Studies used about 15 to 45 times the label amount. (Chen 2016, BCAA arginine citrulline) (Trexler 2019, citrulline meta)
- Beta Alanine40 mg on the label
Studies: 1.6 to 6.4 g a day; ISSN says 4 to 6 g a day; no cognitive change in the one test found. Studies used about 40 to 160 times the label amount. (Hoffman 2014, beta-alanine soldiers) (ISSN beta-alanine stand)
- Niacin7.5 mg on the label
Reference: 16 mg NE is the Daily Value; 35 mg a day is the upper limit for supplements. The label is 47% of the Daily Value and 21% of the upper limit for supplements. (NIH ODS, Niacin)
- Calcium18 mg on the label
Reference: adults need about 1,000 mg a day from all sources; the cognition trial used 1,000 mg with vitamin D. The label is about 2% of what an adult man needs in a day. (NIH ODS, Calcium) (Rossom 2012, WHI calcium + D)
Log scale: each gridline is ten times the one before. Studied ranges are daily amounts from the trials linked on each row; the arginine row compares the label's 400 mg (200 mg base plus 200 mg of an AKG extract) with arginine studies, and the citrulline row 200 mg (two forms) with citrulline studies. Niacin and calcium rows show reference levels, not study doses. A bar being far away does not mean the capsule is unsafe or useless; it means the study results cannot be borrowed for it.
All five rows are compared on the formula page.
The research
Does beta alanine help the brain or memory?
No cognition test we found shows that beta alanine helps the brain, and its best-known effects are on exercise.
Twenty young soldiers took beta alanine or placebo for 28 days of training. Shooting accuracy and jump power improved, but a 2-minute serial subtraction test of thinking showed no difference (p = 0.844). The authors concluded it did not affect cognitive performance (Hoffman 2014, beta-alanine soldiers).
A 2023 review proposes that beta alanine may raise carnosine and a brain growth factor, with antioxidant effects. It is a narrative review. It reports no memory result for a 40 mg dose, and its authors call the pathways potential (Meftahi 2023, beta-alanine review). A mechanism is a reason to run a trial, not a result.
Memory problems that are new, getting worse or getting in the way of daily life need a clinician, not a supplement.
Why the dose matters
Can 40 mg of beta alanine raise carnosine?
We found no evidence that 40 mg raises carnosine, because the studies that did so used thousands of milligrams.
The ISSN position is that four weeks of 4 to 6 g a day raises muscle carnosine, and that all effective amounts are in the thousands of milligrams (ISSN beta-alanine stand). A meta-analysis of 40 trials with 1,461 people found a small overall effect on exercise, and total beta alanine taken did not change it (Saunders 2017, beta-alanine). That second point does not mean small doses work. Those trials all used large doses.
So the sports research tells us little about the capsule, and the capsule makes no sports claim.

Does beta alanine cause tingling?
Yes, tingling of the skin (paresthesia) is the one common effect, and it starts at single doses of about 800 mg or more (NIH ODS, exercise supplements).
It usually lasts 60 to 90 minutes and is not harmful. A safety review of 101 human studies found tingling was the only reported side effect, and dropout rates matched placebo (Dolan 2019, beta-alanine safety). The label's 40 mg is 5% of the 800 mg threshold, so tingling is unlikely from this row. Without trials at 40 mg, though, that is an inference.
| Amount | Where it comes from |
|---|---|
| 40 mg | One MemoHoney capsule |
| 800 mg | Single dose where tingling begins |
| 1.6 g | Low end of daily doses in trials |
| 4 to 6 g | ISSN exercise guideline per day |
Medicines
Is beta alanine safe with other medicines?
We found no interaction listed for beta alanine itself, but the capsule also holds arginine, which does interact with several common medicines (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine).
Ask your doctor or pharmacist first if you take nitrates, sildenafil-type medicines, blood pressure medicines, blood thinners or diabetes medicines, or if you have had a heart attack. Chest pain, fainting or trouble breathing: call 911. Keep taking prescribed medicine as directed. Report a reaction to the FDA (FDA report a problem).
The takeaway
Should beta alanine be the reason you choose MemoHoney?
No, because the label amount is about 1% of the studied dose and the one cognition test found no change.
The fair point is that the amount is printed. See the supplement facts and all five ingredients.
FAQ
Beta alanine and MemoHoney: common questions
How much beta alanine is in MemoHoney?
MemoHoney has 40 mg of beta alanine per capsule, printed in the Supplement Facts panel. A 30-capsule bottle holds 1.2 g. The sports guideline is 4 to 6 g a day, so one capsule is about 1% of it.
Does beta alanine do anything for memory?
We found no trial showing that. The one cognition test we found gave 20 soldiers beta alanine for 28 days and saw no change on a thinking test. Reviews of how it might work in the brain are speculative.
What does beta alanine do in the body?
Muscle cells combine beta alanine with histidine to make carnosine, which helps buffer acid during hard effort. Studies at 4 to 6 g a day found gains in efforts lasting 1 to 4 minutes. The MemoHoney label makes no sports claim.
Will MemoHoney make my skin tingle?
Probably not from the beta alanine, though we cannot promise it. Tingling starts near 800 mg in a single dose, and one capsule has 40 mg. If you feel tingling or a rash, stop and ask a clinician.
Is beta alanine safe long term?
Studies in healthy adults found tingling as the only side effect, but the ODS says there are no safety data beyond one year. The label's amount is small. Ask a clinician if you take medicines or have a condition.
Is beta alanine the same as beta-alanine or alanine?
Beta alanine and beta-alanine are the same thing. It differs from ordinary alanine, which is the form that builds proteins. Beta alanine is the one that muscle cells use to make carnosine.
