Does arginine increase blood flow to the brain? Two studies, read closely

Quick answer

Arginine blood flow brain data are thin. One 1997 study gave arginine by vein at 500 mg per kg and saw whole-brain flow rise 9.5% in 12 people. We found no trial of an oral 200 mg capsule. MemoHoney has not been tested, and its two arginine rows total 400 mg.

Does arginine increase blood flow to the brain in people?

Only under one unusual condition: arginine given by vein at a very high dose raised blood flow in the brain, and we found no trial showing the same from a capsule.

In that PET study, 12 people received either saline or intravenous L-arginine at 500 mg per kg. Whole-brain flow rose from 34.9 to 38.2 ml per 100 g per minute, a 9.5% change, while saline changed nothing (Reutens 1997, arginine cerebral flow). The study measured flow only. It ran no memory test.

How strong is the evidence for each MemoHoney ingredient?

It is weak to absent for every row, scored here from none to strong for memory, focus or brain blood flow.

Arginine has the most human data, but not for a capsule. Citrulline has no human memory trial that we found. Beta alanine showed no change on a thinking test in 20 soldiers over 28 days (Hoffman 2014, beta-alanine soldiers).

  • L-Arginine

    Very little

One small pilot used 6.4 g a day; the label has at most 0.4 g, about 6% of that. (Teotia 2026, oral arginine pilot) (Reutens 1997, arginine cerebral flow)

  • L-Citrulline

    None shown

We found no trial of citrulline malate for memory in adults; the label has 0.2 g of the two forms. (Chen 2016, BCAA arginine citrulline) (NIH ODS, exercise supplements)

  • Beta Alanine

    None shown

One 28-day trial in 20 soldiers found no change on a cognitive test; the label has 0.04 g. (Hoffman 2014, beta-alanine soldiers) (Meftahi 2023, beta-alanine review)

  • Niacin

    Very little

Food niacin was linked to lower risk in one cohort; no trial tested a 7.5 mg capsule. (Morris 2004, dietary niacin cohort) (Hegyi 2004, pellagra review)

  • Calcium

    None shown

A trial of 1,000 mg calcium plus vitamin D found no cognitive effect; the label has 18 mg. (Rossom 2012, WHI calcium + D) (Rutjes 2018, Cochrane vitamins)

Our plain reading of the research linked on each row, for memory, focus or brain blood flow, on a 0 to 4 scale. It rates the ingredient as studied, at the studied amounts. It does not rate MemoHoney: no study has tested the capsule, and its amounts are far smaller.

What do arginine studies actually tell you about a capsule?

They tell you very little about a capsule, because the doses and the routes differ from the label.

The pilot used older adults with measured memory problems (Teotia 2026, oral arginine pilot). The label's 0.4 g is about 6% of that dose, and the people differ too.

What does this mean for the MemoHoney capsule?

It means MemoHoney, a dietary supplement and not a drug, has no study behind a blood flow claim, and its panel lists no honey.

Arginine can lower blood pressure too far with nitrates, sildenafil-type medicines and blood pressure medicines (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine). Ask your doctor or pharmacist first if you take nitrates, sildenafil-type medicines, blood pressure medicines or blood thinners, or have had a heart attack, because the arginine rows can interact with them. Keep taking prescribed medicine exactly as directed. Chest pain, fainting or trouble breathing means call 911. Memory problems that are new, getting worse or getting in the way of daily life need a clinician, not a supplement. Read the full formula page for each row.

FAQ

MemoHoney questions people ask

Does L-arginine change circulation to the brain?

We found no oral trial that shows it. The one brain-flow study gave arginine by vein at 500 mg per kg and saw a 9.5% rise in whole-brain flow in 12 people. A 200 mg capsule is a very different dose and route, so the result cannot be carried over.

Is there a cerebral blood flow supplement that works?

Some are sold with that aim, but we found no trial showing that a supplement like MemoHoney does it. An expert panel convened by AARP could not endorse any ingredient for brain health. Ask a clinician about causes of poor circulation instead of relying on a capsule.

How much arginine did the memory pilot use?

The 2026 pilot used 6.4 g a day for 30 days in older adults with memory complaints. The MemoHoney label has 0.4 g across two rows, about 6% of that. The placebo group improved too, and the authors call it a pilot.

Who should avoid arginine?

People on nitrates, sildenafil-type medicines or blood pressure medicines should ask a doctor first, and arginine is not for people after a recent heart attack. In one trial, 6 of 153 patients on arginine died, against none on placebo. Pregnant, nursing or under 18: consult a physician.
