Citrulline, checked

L-citrulline for brain health: what is actually known?

Quick answer

L-citrulline for brain health has no direct human trial that we found. The closest is a 12-athlete study of a mix of three amino acids, which cannot isolate citrulline. MemoHoney lists two citrulline rows, 200 mg in total. Exercise trials used 3 to 9 g a day, about 15 to 45 times more.

Is there a human trial of L-citrulline for brain health?

No, we found no human trial of L-citrulline or citrulline malate on memory or thinking in ordinary adults.

The closest item is a small study of 12 male taekwondo athletes. After simulated matches they took a mix of BCAA, arginine and citrulline or placebo. Reaction time held up with the mix and fell with placebo (Chen 2016, BCAA arginine citrulline). Because three ingredients were given together, it cannot show what citrulline did alone, and the athletes were fatigued, not older adults.

Does citrulline reach the brain through blood flow?

Citrulline is turned into arginine in the body, and arginine feeds nitric oxide, but nobody has shown that this raises brain blood flow from a capsule.

A physiology review calls nitric oxide an important regulator of brain circulation (Toda 2009, NO and brain blood flow). That describes a mechanism. It does not say that swallowing amino acids changes blood flow in the brain or improves memory. Reviews of muscle blood flow call the evidence for citrulline "scarce and inconsistent".

How strong is the evidence for each MemoHoney ingredient?

For citrulline, the evidence meter reads "none shown" for memory, focus or brain blood flow.

The bars score each ingredient from 0 to 4 on that question. They rate the evidence, not the product.

  • L-Arginine

    Very little

One small pilot used 6.4 g a day; the label has at most 0.4 g, about 6% of that. (Teotia 2026, oral arginine pilot) (Reutens 1997, arginine cerebral flow)

  • L-Citrulline

    None shown

We found no trial of citrulline malate for memory in adults; the label has 0.2 g of the two forms. (Chen 2016, BCAA arginine citrulline) (NIH ODS, exercise supplements)

  • Beta Alanine

    None shown

One 28-day trial in 20 soldiers found no change on a cognitive test; the label has 0.04 g. (Hoffman 2014, beta-alanine soldiers) (Meftahi 2023, beta-alanine review)

  • Niacin

    Very little

Food niacin was linked to lower risk in one cohort; no trial tested a 7.5 mg capsule. (Morris 2004, dietary niacin cohort) (Hegyi 2004, pellagra review)

  • Calcium

    None shown

A trial of 1,000 mg calcium plus vitamin D found no cognitive effect; the label has 18 mg. (Rossom 2012, WHI calcium + D) (Rutjes 2018, Cochrane vitamins)

Our plain reading of the research linked on each row, for memory, focus or brain blood flow, on a 0 to 4 scale. It rates the ingredient as studied, at the studied amounts. It does not rate MemoHoney: no study has tested the capsule, and its amounts are far smaller.

What does this mean for the MemoHoney capsule?

It means the citrulline rows in MemoHoney have no memory trial behind them, and 200 mg is far below what exercise studies used.

MemoHoney is a dietary supplement, not a drug, and contains no honey. Short studies up to 6 g a day found no adverse effects, but stomach discomfort occurred in 6 of 41 people in one study (NIH ODS, exercise supplements). Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you take nitrates or blood pressure medicines, and keep taking prescribed medicine. Memory problems that are new or getting worse need a clinician. See the L-citrulline page.

FAQ

MemoHoney questions people ask

Is L-citrulline good for the brain?

We found no human trial showing it. The closest study mixed citrulline with two other ingredients in 12 athletes. Citrulline is used by the body to make arginine, but the label's 200 mg across two rows has no memory study behind it.

What is citrulline malate?

It is citrulline bound to malate, a salt, and it is about 56.6% citrulline by weight. MemoHoney lists 100 mg of citrulline malate and 100 mg of citrulline HCl per capsule. Exercise trials used 3 to 9 g a day of citrulline products.

Does citrulline cognition research exist?

Very little. Citrulline cognition work is limited to a small mixed-ingredient athlete study and animal studies, which we did not use. No trial of citrulline alone in healthy adults for memory turned up in our searches.

Can citrulline replace arginine in a supplement?

The body converts citrulline into arginine, which is why products carry both. That does not prove a memory effect from either. Arginine has one small oral pilot at 6.4 g a day; citrulline has none that we found.
