Physiology vs trials

Nitric oxide and memory: what is known, and what is not

Quick answer

Nitric oxide and memory are linked in physiology, but not in supplement trials. Nitric oxide helps regulate blood flow in the brain, yet no study we found shows that a 200 mg amino acid capsule changes it or changes memory. MemoHoney has not been tested at all.

What do studies show about nitric oxide and brain blood flow?

They show a mechanism, one intravenous experiment and one small oral pilot, and none tested a capsule like MemoHoney.

Physiology reviewNitric oxide helps regulate brain blood flowMechanism only; no supplement tested
1997 PET study, 12 peopleArginine by vein raised whole-brain flow 9.5%500 mg per kg by infusion; no memory test
2026 pilot, older adults6.4 g a day of arginine for 30 days; placebo also improvedSmall; measured memory problems

Sources: (Reutens 1997, arginine cerebral flow) and (Teotia 2026, oral arginine pilot). The pilot dose is about 16 times the arginine in a capsule, and the capsule is taken once a day.

What do the marketing lines about nitric oxide leave out?

They leave out the dose and the missing trial: the lines state a pathway as if it were a result.

The label of MemoHoney does not use the words "boosts nitric oxide". Capsules like it are often sold with them. These are the lines, set beside the sources.

  1. “Boosts nitric oxide”

Arginine and citrulline are building blocks for nitric oxide, but one blood-flow study gave arginine by vein at a very high dose, and no study tested a 200 mg capsule. (Reutens 1997, arginine cerebral flow) (Toda 2009, NO and brain blood flow)

  2. “Improves memory and focus”

No study we found tested these label amounts on memory. One small pilot used 6.4 g of arginine a day; the capsule holds 40 to 200 mg of each ingredient. (Teotia 2026, oral arginine pilot) (NIA, Cognitive health and older adults)

  3. “Supports brain health”

NIA says no supplement is recommended for preventing memory decline, and an expert panel could not endorse any brain-health ingredient. (NIA, Cognitive health and older adults) (GCBH 2019, supplements and brain)

  4. “Reviews prove it works”

Reviews are not evidence of an effect, and fake or bought reviews are banned by an FTC rule. (FTC fake reviews rule) (FTC health products guidance)

The FDA allows a supplement to describe a structure or function but treats a disease claim as a drug claim (FDA structure/function claims).

How does this relate to the MemoHoney label?

MemoHoney is a dietary supplement in vegetable capsules, not a drug, and its Supplement Facts panel lists no honey.

It lists two arginine rows and two citrulline rows, 600 mg between them, plus beta alanine, niacin and calcium. We found no trial of the product, so we make no claim about nitric oxide or blood flow. Arginine can lower blood pressure too far with nitrates, sildenafil-type medicines and blood pressure medicines, and it may add to blood thinners (Mayo Clinic, L-arginine). Keep taking prescribed medicine; chest pain, fainting or trouble breathing means call 911. See the guide to nitric oxide and the brain.

FAQ

MemoHoney questions people ask

Does arginine increase nitric oxide?

The body uses arginine to make nitric oxide, but we found no trial showing that a 200 mg capsule raises it in people. The label of MemoHoney does not make that claim. Studies of arginine used grams a day, not milligrams.

Can nitric oxide improve brain function?

We found no source showing that taking amino acids to raise nitric oxide changes brain function in healthy adults. The physiology review only describes nitric oxide as a regulator of brain blood flow. A mechanism is not proof of a benefit.

What did the intravenous arginine brain study show?

In 12 people, arginine given by vein at 500 mg per kg raised whole-brain blood flow from 34.9 to 38.2 ml per 100 g per minute. It measured flow, not memory, and used a very high dose by infusion, not an oral capsule.

Is nitric oxide the same as nitrous oxide?

No. Nitric oxide is a gas the body makes in small amounts to relax blood vessels. Nitrous oxide is a different gas, used as an anesthetic. The MemoHoney label mentions neither; its arginine and citrulline rows are the ingredients linked to nitric oxide.
